Video: Green Homes Concierge Service

Household News
Channels: Household News Tags: energy efficiency

Our intrepid editor, Adam Vaughan, has signed up for a eco home audit with London Mayor Ken Livingstone's Green Homes Concierge Service. For £200, the service bags you an energy performance certificate giving your home a green score, and the auditors follow up with recommendations and quotes for work once you start any eco upgrades to your home.

Adam's eco auditor, Lex, comes armed with gadgets to measure drafts and heat, and impresses with his thermal gun and depressurising door. He goes through the house counting energy-saving lightbulbs and sniffing around the radiators, and pronounces Adam's yearly home CO2 emissions at 4.8 tonnes. His overall score comes to 67 out of 100 -- not bad considering the UK average is 46.

Watch this space for more on the Green Homes Concierge Service -- Adam will be receiving follow-up advice, and may actually get off his butt to put some into practise.

Are there any good tax rebates for having wall insulation fitted? Seems like a good way to get some money back towards improving your home.

Short answer, yes. You can apply for a grant. Enter your details on the Energy Saving Trust website and see what it tells you:
http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/proxy/view/full/2019/grantsandofferssearch

Your Local Authority may well offer a grant. If you're on benefits it'll almost certainly offer a grant.

If you live in London, you should be able to get a grant under the Mayor of London's insulation offer for cavity walls, which most modern homes have (http://www.london.gov.uk/insulate).

As I understand it, the Mayor's scheme doesn't cover the sort of plasterboard wall insulation I'd need to get, as my home has solid brick walls rather than cavity walls

Shame the mayor won't offer a rebate if you need plasterboard insulation. Surely a high percentage of city homes will have brick walls with no cavity?

Still, good to know there is money available to help.

Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
Brompton M3L Folding Bike
This British-made folding bike has small wheels but goes for big money -- and is built for practicality
Dahon Jack 2008 Folding Bike
Bigger wheels do mean better speed and stability -- but a bigger, more awkward folded form, too
Sony Bravia KDL-32V2000
You won't find a better TV for picture in its class, but you will find ones with superior green credentials
