Ecover's air freshener sniffs out ethical homes

If you're a fan of Ecover products and your house is a bit whiffy, you're in for a treat -- the ethical and environmentally friendly company is releasing an eco air freshener.

The product is based on plant extracts and essential oils, and comes in three fragrances: Lavender, Lemontree and Rosegarden. Rather than a block of glass or plastic, the Ecover range comes in a glass jar filled with liquid, topped with a cork and accompanied by a bunch of wooden sticks. You simply place the sticks into the liquid to wick the smell into the air; put more sticks in and the smell is stronger, remove some and it becomes less intense.

“Most conventional products on the market use non-renewable ingredients and synthetic perfumes, and customers want an ecological alternative. Ecover has pioneered products that provide people with an effective ecological alternative and we see room fragrance as a natural extension,” says Clare Allman, marketing manager, Ecover UK. The range is available from Homebase and various independent health food shops, and costs £12.49 -- more than some air fresheners, but at least you don't get that usual smell of mixed chemicals.

As well as making the first phosphate-free laundry powder in 1984 and a plethora of other eco products, Ecover also has an unusually green manufacturing system. It treats all of its own waste water on-site, for example, and reuses cardboard boxes up to 20 times before recycling them.

Husqvarna Automower Solar Hybrid
The automation justifies the price if your lawn's big enough, but it's not the greenest product you'll ever buy
Hi-Tec Enviro Golf Shoes
They're a passable but unspectacular attempt at green golf shoes
Timberland Men's Earthkeepers Rippler Chuka Boots
These boots are classy, solid and boast decent eco creds, the only catch being Timberland's previous chequered record on worker rights
'Yes' Water-based Organic Lubricant and Moisturiser
It's a great lube that enhances sex without relying on fake colours, tastes or smells -- and without compromising on quality
Lelo Elise Vibrator
It's a vibrator so it should be your new best friend just because, but we're not sure it's the best eco-friendly find in the sex-toy department
