Fancy getting some energy-saving stuff for free? British Gas, B&Q and the Mayor of London's DIY Planet Repairs have set up the London Lightbulb Amnesty this weekend, which in a nutshell means if you go to participating B&Qs in London you can swap two old incandescent bulbs for a pair of free new compactfluorescent ones.
The idea behind the campaign is simple: raise awareness of energy-saving lightbulbs and how to save energy in general, and hook us Londoners on the idea of buying low-energy lighting. Mayor Ken wants us to cut our carbon footprints and, considering energy-saving lightbulbs use 80 per cent less electricity than ordinary ones, fairly reckons this is a good place to start. B&Q would probably like us to come into their stores and spend more money on energy-saving bulbs -- and perhaps a wind turbine or solar panel installation too.
We're planning to join in the fun and finally get rid of the two old bulbs which have been sat in our cupboard for ages looking gloomy. To make the offer even greener, B&Q will recycle our old bulbs. There is a limit of two bulbs per person, but we reckon a few family members and a Groucho Marx disguise should help bypass that limit and milk the offer for all it's worth.
London Lightbulb Amnesty takes place at these B&Q stores from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 January 2008.
