The Sainsbury's Kitchen Caddy is a handy little bin that you can store your organic waste in before taking it to the compost heap, saving you traipsing out to the bottom of the garden every time you peel a potato. We use them, and find them really helpful, but they do get pretty manky. You could wash it out every time you use it, but that’s far from convenient. A better solution has just emerged from Sainsbury's, though, in the form of small biodegradable bags.
They’re made of corn starch and designed to fit into the caddies perfectly. Obviously it’s slightly greener not to use them, because they have to be produced and shipped, which creates carbon emissions, but if it makes it easier and simpler to compost then they have a positive impact overall.
Fill them up, throw them on the compost heap and they'll break down into nice mulch for the garden, just as any other organic matter does. The caddy and the bags are available from Sainsbury's; the caddy costs £2.99 and packs of 10 biodegradable liners cost £1.65.
