How long do you spend in the shower? As winter draws in it may be tempting to huddle under the hot water for hours but that's not exactly the greenest option -- and it will make you late for work. For those who need a bit of help to conserve water, you can buy a handy shower timer.
Envirosax, which makes organic shopping bags, have a $3 (£1.50) timer which sticks to a shower wall with a suction cup. Its blue, pink, green, or grey sands take four minutes to pass through the hourglass. Envirosax say the outer plastic case of the shower timer is polypropylene, which can be recycled although it is a difficult process.
You can also buy a shower timer from Nigel's Eco Store. The Shower Coach Shower Timer (see main picture) is made of ABS plastic. It looks pretty clunky but does the same job as the Envirosax one...although it does give you five minutes scrubbing instead of four.
If neither grabs you, you may consider taking a 'Navy shower' instead,
which involves turning off the water while lathering, and then rinsing
in a hurry. And there are plenty of other ways to save water out there like low-flow shower heads, fixing taps and dual-flush loos.
