Earth Aid creates first-aid kit for the planet

A few Earth Kit ingredients: (from left) weather sensor, dryer balls, LED nightlight
Household News
Channels: Household News Tags: energy-saving, carbon emissions

What do energy hogs deserve for Christmas? Earth Aid Kits are a not-so-subtle hint to those who leave the lights on when they leave the room and the taps on while they brush their teeth.

The customisable packages from Earth Aid Enterprises start at $68 for a dorm room, $82 for a one-bed flat, and $201 for a three-bed home. The accompanying website offers carbon calculators designed to tally a household's needs and potential resource savings.A family of three would save $460 in energy bills and 7,442 pounds of carbon after using a kit for a year, claims the company, which was recently launched by college graduates in Washington, D.C.

Depending upon the need of each home, each kit includes a combination of programmable thermostats, smart power strips and timers, fluorescent bulbs, LED night lights, low-flow shower heads, tire pressure gauges, and weather sensors.

Pinnacle Journey 1.0 2008
Cheap and cheerful -- the Journey hits the value bullseye. And doesn't end up a horrible compromise in doing so.
Mezzo d-10
Too costly, particularly compared to its d-9 sibling. But despite that, this is the state-of-the-art for folding bikes -- fast, light, practical.
Puma Glow Rider
The emperor's new bicycle -- all marketing and no trousers. Over-expensive, handles and folds poorly, doesn't glow well enough, and is stealable despite the weird cable-cum-downtube.
Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
