Traidcraft is aiming to "get to the bottom" of unfair trade by releasing sustainable toilet roll, kitchen tissue and hankies -- all made from 100 per cent recycled paper collected within the UK. And for the first time, a percentage of the wholesale price (five per cent) will go directly into a fund to help Traidcraft support cotton, tea and craft producers, and finance other work in fair trade, business services and providing support.
We're not too keen on the kitchen roll -- using reusable tea towels and sponges is a much greener option -- but reusable handkerchiefs are a little 1950s and (thankfully) there's no such thing as reusable toilet roll, so we think the tissues and recycled toilet roll are great alternatives.
With each person in Britain using 4,000 rolls of toilet paper in their lifetime -- apart from those dedicated types who follow the Sheryl Crow rule of using just one square per toilet trip -- choosing recycled options is a good way of reducing landfill and saving trees.
Each product has a pun/slogan associated with it. The toilet tissue exclaims that it is "flushing away unfair trade", the kitchen roll promises that it's "cleaning up trade injustice" and the tissues are "blowing poverty away". See what they did there?
"This tissue is great quality and competitively priced -- the difference is that through the sales, money is ploughed into a fund to help people in developing countries trade their way out of poverty," says Larry Bush, managing director of Traidcraft. "It could mean families will be able to provide food for their children, send them to school -- or even build a much needed hygienic toilet or a latrine for their own use."
"We're inviting everyone to join our fight against poverty by making the simple switch from their regular brand of tissue products to Traidcraft's products, which directly contribute to transforming people's lives."
The products are all available online on Traidcraft's website, and in Boots shops across the country. The toilet roll is £19 for 40 rolls, the kitchen roll is £15 for 24 rolls and the tissues are £28.80 for 24 boxes.
