Dragon's Den puts money in Ben the Bin

Reestore's new recycled recycling bin, Ben the Bin
Household News
Channels: Household News Tags: recycled, recycling

Reestore's Gordon the Wheelbarrow Chair, Laura the Lamp and Ben the Bin make us giggle. But if the no-nonsense judges of BBC's Dragon's Den can take the eco-design company's product names seriously, so can we. Not only did they take Reestore designer Max McMurdo seriously when he pitched for investment, they also gave him £50,000 for a 30 per cent stake in the company, so the newest sprig on the eco-design tree, Ben the Bin, can go into production.

Ben the Bin is a stackable and portable recycling bin made to hold recycling materials in much the same way as boxes in corners and bags on door handles -- just in a more stylish way. Made from 100 per cent recycled plastic and designed to use the kind of plastic carrier bags we all have mountains of -- despite trying our best not to pick them up at the shops -- Ben the Bin 'himself' is a bit eco, too.

While a couple of the Dragon's Den judges criticised Ben the Bin's dependency on plastic carrier bags, which they'd rather see banned, McMurdo defended his decision to use them: "Plastic carrier bags will be with us for the next ten years and rather than moaning about them, we should get more use out of the ones we've already got."

If everything goes according to plan, Ben the Bin will be on sale by January or February next year.Watch out Reggae Reggae Sauce, Ben the Bin is set to take over your space as our favourite Dragon's Den product.

Very similar to this Sprout Design idea, which is already on sale:

Though I don't think Sprout's is made from recycled materials (need to check)

Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off

This British-made folding bike has small wheels but goes for big money -- and is built for practicality

You won't find a better TV for picture in its class, but you will find ones with superior green credentials
