We tend to be ready for our elevenses by around ten, but yesterday and today we've been fine and dandy. This we can only attribute to Pertwood Organic Farm's brand new muesli with dried banana and walnuts, which we've been testing.
The secret lies in the amazing, and very filling, oat, barley and rye base. There's not a grain of wheat in it, which is both great news for those who don't feel wheat is good for them and for the world's dwindling wheat stocks. The cereals that are in the muesli are all UK-grown and certified organic by the Soil Association. Unlike most mueslis, the oats don't dominate the base. The ratio between oat, barley and rye is perfect for us.
We would have liked more walnuts in it, though, and we would have preferred the pieces of dried Fairtrade banana to have been smaller. We've tried the muesli with both cold and warm milk and when we had it with cold milk, the big pieces of banana bore an uncanny resemblance to chewy gobstoppers. When we poured warm milk over it, however, the pieces softened, we could break them in half with our spoon and the delicious, sweet banana flavour really came through.Like many of Pertwood's other customers (the company asked them), we are very pleased to see the lack of raisins. How liberating it is to eat a muesli without the boring dried vine fruit as the main sweetener.
The muesli maker suggests we can eat this with yoghurt or fruit juice instead of milk. We haven't tried, but it sounds good. But we can assure you, warm milk poured over a generous portion of this muesli makes for an organic brekkie winner.
Pertwood Organic Farm's Organic Muesli with Banana and Walnut costs around £3 for 425g and is available from leading supermarkets, independent food stores and online retailers.
