Do you also hover around the fruit aisle with the pros and cons of organic produce versus Fairtrade spinning around in your head? If so, you're far from the only one. The Soil Association's thorough investigation of the issue of whether air-freighted products should be allowed to carry the Soil Association stamp proves this really is a tricky dilemma.
After a four-month-long consultation process involving members of the public, NGOs and government agencies as well as meetings with over a 100 organisations, the Soil Association last year proposed that it would only certify air-freighted organic produce if it also meets the Soil Association's own Ethical Trade or the Fairtrade Foundation's standards.
Now the organic charity has launched a second round of consultation to give people the opportunity to comment on this recommendation. They want to find out whether it really is a good, practical and fair idea.

Not buying goods that have been flown in from distant places is one of those New Years Resolutions that always fails to stick. When you see great fresh Tomatoes in December I really don't care where they came from. All I know is that I am making Tomato Sauce and I need some Tomatoes.

If it's air freighted the taste will be nothing compared to local seasonal fresh food, it is worth making the effort to eat seasonally and locally - your taste buds will thank you!
As for labelling I don't see that mixing our labels is very helpful, it is great if foods that I can't obtain locally could be fairly traded and organic and not air freighted either..
But, I think the soil associations expertise is in certifying organic produce and that is what it should stand by and for.
