Our decision to go as organic and Fairtrade as possible left us with a void in our lives in the form of Marks and Spencer's Melting Chocolate Middles. That's why the SmartPlanet team has hailed the arrival of M&S' new Fairtrade Fondant au Chocolate with open arms.
The fondant tart looks a little small when you first take it out of the box, but fret not -- it's so rich that even if you're a serious chocolate eater (we're talking from experience here), a delicately sliced piece -- with a few raspberries, say -- will be enough to satisfy you, we're sure. It's moist, rich, very chocolaty and tastes like one of those desserts you get at posh restaurants with a small scoop of an exotic-flavoured ice cream.
One of the SmartPlaneteers tested the Fairtrade fondant as a dinner party dessert and the verdict was: "Everybody thought it was delicious and were pleasantly surprised it was rich without being too sweet. It's very gooey with a great texture. It was a bit tricky to cook properly, though, as you couldn't tell if it was burning or undercooked."
Let's face it, M&S desserts are normally yummy, so we aren't surprised this one is too. But what makes this dessert top Fairtrade bananas in our opinion is that the cane sugar, cocoa and dark chocolate in the fondant are all certified Fairtrade and the eggs are free-range. It would have been perfect if the butter and flour had been organic and UK-sourced, but we realise that might be pushing our luck for a fiver.
The packaging -- both the tray and the box -- are made from 50 per cent recycled paper, which is a nice touch. So thank you M&S for making it easier to eat scrummy chocolate desserts with a good conscience, New Year's resolution aside.
M&S Fairtrade Fondant au Chocolate is available in stores now at £4.99.
