Co-op gets fruity with Fairtrade smoothies

The Co-operative's Fairtrade smoothies
Food News
Channels: Food News Tags: fairtrade, co-operative

Smoothies are a great way of helping you get to that all-important five-a-day fruit target, but unlike regular juices, certified Fairtrade fodder is scarce. Looking to change that situation for the better, the Co-operative is stretching its environmental muscle and introducing a new range of Fairtrade smoothies to its supermarkets shelves.

The new drinks will be available in two flavours -- Mango and Orange, and Pink Guava -- with their exotic fruits sourced from countries as far flung as Ecuador, Cuba, South Africa and Brazil. Admittedly this tots up a fair-few air miles, but we haven’t seen many pink guavas in the local allotment recently, and given the Co-op’s Fairtrade credentials we’ll let them off.

Priced at £1.99 a litre, the smoothies are available in selected Co-operative stores now, and join NB!’s offering (stocked at Waitrose) as the only Fairtrade smoothies currently available in supermarkets.

These look nice, but isn't it time Innocent started doing organic and Fairtrade smoothies? After all, they do claim to be 'innocent'.

Innocent don't believe in Fairtrade as it means paying a fixed minimum price - they like to let the market (and their buyers) set the price instead.

Pinnacle Journey 1.0 2008
Cheap and cheerful -- the Journey hits the value bullseye. And doesn't end up a horrible compromise in doing so.
Mezzo d-10
Too costly, particularly compared to its d-9 sibling. But despite that, this is the state-of-the-art for folding bikes -- fast, light, practical.
Puma Glow Rider
The emperor's new bicycle -- all marketing and no trousers. Over-expensive, handles and folds poorly, doesn't glow well enough, and is stealable despite the weird cable-cum-downtube.
Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
