Green your Christmas: chocolate

Chocolala Fairtrade chocolates

You can't go wrong with chocolate as a gift, right? You can, however, buy chocolate that -- in addition to melting in the mouth -- gives some love to the people who produced it in the first place. Which is where organic, Fairtrade and Equitrade chocs enter the fray.

For gifts, our favourite ethical chocolatier right now is Fairtrade-certified Chocolala. Just check out its beautiful metal tins, which are packed to the gills -- thanks to no unnecessary packaging -- and designed for re-use rather than recycling. All its chocs are of a tip top standard, but we particularly like the chocolate-covered mango. At £22 (including delivery) these boxes are certainly gift material rather than daily indulgence fodder.

There is, of course, a lorry-load of choice. For organic chocs, we recommend Green & Blacks's gift sets, Booja-Booja's hand-made and dairy-free champagne truffles at £7.29, Montezuma's gorgeous edible tree baubles, and Duchy Originals' safe-but-not-very-exciting box sets.

If you'd like to ensure some more cash gets to the producers, fairer trade is the way to go. Divine makes a very lovely £10 Fairtrade box that's on sale at Waitrose, while Sainsbury's stocks Malagasy's excellent 'Equitrade' dark chocolate.

Whichever you choose, just make sure it doesn't involve a bar bought at the garage on Christmas Eve, inspired by an advert featuring Phil Collins and a gorilla.

Am enjoying the shopping updates from you and Rikke, despite not having done any, but am eargerly awaiting a green jewellery one. I'm under unders this Christmas to get something nice and I want to try and make it as green as possible. I've checked out a few places I know of but was wondering if you had any ideas too?
