Consumers don't bank on their green principles

Spending on ethical products may be at an all-time high, but it seems many self-professed green consumers aren't putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to deciding where they stash their cash.

According to a recent report by ethical banking specialists Triodos, well-meaning ethical shoppers often don't apply the same principles to their choice of bank -- despite recognising the potentially harmful environmental and social implications. Most blamed a lack of services and information for their apathy.

In an attempt to highlight the importance of ethical banking, Triodos has launched a campaign encouraging savers to embrace more sustainable financial products. As its website points out to great effect, "You buy organic, fairtrade, save energy, fly less, drive less, ride a bike and recycle. You put your money into a bank that invests it unethically. You create the mess you've just cleared up."

Triodos Bank itself only lends to businesses and charities that directly benefit people and the environment, so its savers know exactly how their money is being used. Current customers include SmartPlanet-favourite Cafédirect and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage.

To make good on your green credentials, check out the accounts on offer at Triodos by going to www.activatemoney.com or calling free on 0500 008 720.

It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
Brompton M3L Folding Bike
This British-made folding bike has small wheels but goes for big money -- and is built for practicality
Dahon Jack 2008 Folding Bike
Bigger wheels do mean better speed and stability -- but a bigger, more awkward folded form, too

You won't find a better TV for picture in its class, but you will find ones with superior green credentials
