Buy a rainforest with Co-op's 'think' credit card

The Co-operative Bank's new 'think' credit card encourages ethical consumerism
Finance News
Channels: Finance News Tags: ethical shopping

So you thought you could shop with a clean conscience using American Express Red or Barclaycard Breathe? Well, think again. Literally. The Co-operative Bank's new credit card, 'think', is here to make you feel good about that retail-therapy habit.

With a typical variable of 14 per cent and no annual fee, think gives us a better deal than Barclaycard Breathe (14.9 per cent) and American Express Red (16.9 per cent), and on top of that it's got quite a few feel-good features. When your first card is issued, the Co-operative Bank will buy half an acre of Brazilian rainforest to be protected on your behalf, and for every £100 you spend on the card, 25p will go to the Cool Earth charity which works to protect rainforests.

Contrary to ordinary credit cards, think doesn't just encourage us to spend -- it encourages us to spend ethically by giving shoppers a special rate of 7 per cent per annum on products bought from the Co-op bank's ethical partners, including Traidcraft, Lush, Adili and TheTrainline.com, for six months after each purchase. Some partners, such as Ecotricity and Nigel's eco store, also offer pretty impressive discounts for think holders.

The Co-op bank received advice from the Ethical Consumer Research Association on what companies to partner with, and Rob Harrison from ECRA says: "By buying think-approved products, all of which are at the forefront of responsible corporate behaviour, you not only lend your support to ethically progressive companies, but also put pressure on those that are lagging behind.”

So what are you waiting for? Get shopping...

It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off

This British-made folding bike has small wheels but goes for big money -- and is built for practicality
