Once upon a time it was tough being an ethical consumer. But the days when it was a mission to find organic oats or trousers that weren't made in a sweatshop are gone. In fact, there are now so many shops and companies around selling all sorts of ethical and eco goodies that the San Francisco-based Green Zebra guide to sustainable living has decided to bring the concept over here. With it comes the opportunity to get our hands on £5,000 worth of discount vouchers for about 200 eco and ethical companies based in the capital and online.
The idea is that Londoners pay £20 for the Green Zebra booklet, which will contain articles on how to live a more sustainable lifestyle in London and discount vouchers for green and ethical shops, markets, restaurants, spas, and so on. San Francisco residents Anne Vollen and Sheryl Cohen came up with the Green Zebra project last year as an incentive to city-dwellers to shop ethically and sustainably.
Ariana Bourke, director of Green Zebra London, tells us that Mayor Ken Livingstone is very supportive of the project, but emphasises the booklet is not just for those living in the city. She told SmartPlanet: "Most of the shops and businesses are in London, but everybody can buy it and there are some amazing online offers." Bourke also points out that the Green Zebra can be used as a sort of green guide book to London for visitors to find out where to go for an organic lunch or a Fairtrade coffee, and where to go shopping.
Schools, NGOs and charities all stand to make a bit of cash from selling the Green Zebra, as organisations will be able to buy the guide for about £13 and then sell it on at fundraising events. In the near future, Bourke hopes the Green Zebra London might be available virtually and via text messages to save paper, but for now interested shoppers will have to either buy it online or from a fundraiser.
If everything goes according to plan, we'll be able to get our copies of the Green Zebra London booklet from mid-December.
