The days when most self-respecting fashion victims wouldn't be caught dead without their blood diamonds and baby seal skin coats are on the wane. Now the Devil doesn't wear Prada, but rather looks to old plastic bags for high fashion.
Yesterday at London's Fashion and Textile Museum, bright, up-and-coming fashion designers showed off their designs and competed for the Ethic Fashion Award, which rewards the young designer who has managed to create the trendiest, most beautiful piece of fashion using the most environmentally friendly and ethical materials. SmartPlanet editorial board member, Joanna Yarrow, hosted the event.
The winning design was created by the Urbanites, aka Nicole Da Silva and Phong Nguyen from Hackney Community College. The two design students had created a wedding dress (above) made by deconstructing and customising an old wedding dress from a charity shop. Anyone getting up close to the bride could check out information about recycling, which Da Silva and Nguyen had printed onto the fabric.
