Hop on SmartPlanet's racing bike for a whistlestop look at Sarah Gibb's sustainable cards, Comet's VAT cut and LED bike lights powered by the sun. Plus Energy Wasting Day, Agnes B's better bags and Lush's recycled bottles.
Say happy birthday with eco charm
Ethical Superstore has introduced a new range of handsome and frankly very girly greetings cards. Designed by Sarah Gibb, they're made from FSC-certified (sustainable forests) recycled card. For added greenie points, the clear plastic wrapper -- which usually ends up in the bin -- is made from compostable corn starch. They're £1.95 each.
Teeny solar LEDs for bikes (pictured)
We've seen solar lights for bicycles before, but this one by LEDtronics has to be the smallest our radar's detected. Though you can't really see it in the photo above, it has a tiny solar panel on the top, which charges up an internal battery and in turn lights up a mighty efficient flashing red light to stop you getting mowed down. The snappily-named Flashing LED Solar-Powered Safety Bike Light is on sale now for $17 (£8.50) plus shipping.
Lush bottles go fully recycled
Renowned for its low-packaging policy -- the reason for the outrageously strong pong when you walk past its stores -- Lush has now gone one further by switching its bottles to recycled plastics. The move affects all its shampoos, conditioners, gels and creams. Nice work. Now we just need Neal's Yard and The Body Shop to play catch-up.
A corny touch by Agnes B
Swanky French designer Agnes B has jumped on the green bag bandwagon. Carrier bags given away by the label are now made from corn starch, which should theoretically break down without releasing greenhouse gases -- provided the store's fashionista customers make the effort to compost them rather than landfilling 'em.
Comet cuts VAT on eco electricals
We missed this one. Since Easter, Comet's had a sale on energy-efficient washing machines, dishwashers and fridge-freezers. The savings aren't monster, but they're not bad -- there's a £350 Bosch A+ washing machine knocked down to £300. Comet's dressed the sale up as a VAT discount on eco electricals -- which is what old Gordie Brown's been pushing for at a European level.
Energy Wasting Day
The corporate dudes at Together.com have put together a video spoof on energy-saving. Check it out -- it rates moderate to high on the funny scale.
