The Hemp Trading Company has been making clothes from hemp since 1999 -- when a university hempology society graduated into a fashion label. Now, THTC has expanded its range further with some new designs. The company's new products are down to the fact that it has bagged a few celebrity endorsements and collaborations, including making merchandise for SmartPlanet favourite bands Beardyman, Morcheeba and Braintax, among many others.
Getting people like this on board is great news for both the THTC brand and ethical clothing in general, as it generates a lot of interest in sustainable design.
The company makes all of its products from sustainable materials like bamboo, organic cotton and hemp. Hemp is one of the most environmentally friendly materials, though, because it requires no pesticides or fertilisers to grow.
The hemp plant is also extremely versatile, with uses including creating textiles, rope, plastics and high students.
"Older and wiser, clever design companies now prefer it to so-called eco materials as a low tech solution to a myriad of ecological issues caused by the global fashion trade," says Lucy Siegle, The Observer's ethical columnist. "We should love it, use it, mix it with other natural fibres, [and] wear it close to our skin and with pride."
