Thanks to Estethica, the ethical leg of London Fashion Week, we're looking forward to the autumn and winter months for the first time in living memory. When we visited yesterday, we found ourselves getting excited about the prospect of wearing Amana's blue tailored tencel and hemp coat and Makepiece's cute knitted cardigans come the colder months.
The Estethica exhibition was packed with expected regulars like People Tree, Junky Styling (pictured far bottom), Terra Plana, Ciel and Katharine Hamnett, as well as new international brands like Fin, Viridis Luxe and Noir.
The People Tree, Amana and Fin collections were completely up our street and we can't wait to get our hands on a few of their outfits. Our prize for most exciting UK newcomer, though, goes to Izzy Lane (pictured below), whose amazing knits are made from the wool of rare-breed sheep she has rescued from the slaughterhouse. All the knitwear is handmade by women in Yorkshire, too -- it doesn't get more ethical than that.
Makepiece's lovely cardigans and dresses (pictured above) have a similar background -- handmade from local sheep's wool and designed to be composted when the outfit has been worn to pieces.
Ethical jeweller Fifi Bijoux and bag-designers Nahui Ollin, Sonya Kashmiri and Pibiones did a good job of bringing eco and ethical accessories to the fashion forefront. We would have liked a few more jewellery designers and some general accessory designers to have been there, though. After all, great quality basic outfits from places like People Tree, Amana and Viridis Luxe can last far longer than one season if they're matched with the right accessories.
After spending a day at Estethica, we must admit we 'get' how fashionistas can get all worked up about London Fashion Week. Clothes that make us excited about autumn and winter long before spring has even come are powerful stuff.
