When we first laid eyes on Amana's collection, it really hit home that organic and fair trade clothes can be incredibly stylish and practical. The range's classic designs lend versatility to every piece, and the quality makes each item a wardrobe-essential.
The outfits in Amana's spring/summer collection are made from organic cottons, organic silks and a variety of hemp mixes. OK, so we were a teeny bit sceptical towards the hemp-mixing business at first, but we've been converted. We bought a hemp/cotton dress from Amana's autumn/winter collection, and it was our favourite piece of clothing for the season.
Looking through the spring/summer offerings, we can't wait to get a closer look at the Najat shorts made from hemp and recycled polyester, and the Orchid print dress made from organic silk (see image below).
As always, Amana's garments are handmade by women artisans in the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The designers, Helen Wood and Erin Tabrar, have worked with the women since they launched Amana, and while the clothes are not certified Fairtrade, the two founders assure us they work with the women on a fair trade basis, paying them a fair wage, providing them with technical training, making advance payments and offering long-term contracts.
Amana designer, Helen Wood, sums up why we can't wait for the collection to be launched: "This season was all about beautiful, sumptuous fabrics -- we wanted to create something very feminine, that proved you can dress with a conscience and be stylish at the same time."
Amana will launch its spring/summer collection during Fairtrade Fortnight and will be available from Amana's online shop from 1 March.
