At Davos, Dell and Microsoft go (Product) Red

Bill Gates, Bono and Michael Dell
Business News
Channels: Business News Tags: computer, aids, ethical

It's not every day you see two computer geeks hanging out with a rock star, but at the Davos, Switzerland, World Economic Forum Microsoft's chairman Bill Gates and Dell's founder Michael Dell teamed up with rock star Bono to introduce new (Product) Red computers.

The (Product) Red campaign, created by Bono and philanthropist Bobby Shriver, kicked off in the US in October 2006 with an aim to fight AIDS in Africa. Apple, Gap and Motorola have all joined in at some point. With these new Dell and Microsoft specially branded (Product) Red PCs, the two companies will donate a portion of sales to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Our tech-y friends at CNET.com had a look at the new computers, and decided that even though it's tough to brand an operating system, Microsoft has done an admirable job of creating (Product) Red-themed backgrounds, screen savers and other gadgets.

With each XPS One, Dell's all-in-one desktop PC, sold, Dell and Microsoft will contribute $80 (£40) to fighting AIDS in Africa. Ethical indeed -- and they aren't charging more than usual for the product. Then there's Dell's XPS 1530 laptop, which already comes in red. But now that it's Red (capital R, thank you very much), it will have the special operating system and for each one sold, $50 (£25) will go to the Global Fund.

We sure don't think that's geeky.

(Product) Red PCs won't be available in the UK until 31 January, but you can check them out on Dell's US site now.

Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
Brompton M3L Folding Bike
This British-made folding bike has small wheels but goes for big money -- and is built for practicality
Dahon Jack 2008 Folding Bike
Bigger wheels do mean better speed and stability -- but a bigger, more awkward folded form, too
Sony Bravia KDL-32V2000
You won't find a better TV for picture in its class, but you will find ones with superior green credentials
