Environmentally friendly and design-conscious online shop Nigel's Eco Store has been picked out as Yahoo! Find's retailer of the year for 2007. The store was recognised for its variety of environmentally friendly household products such as recycled glassware, low-energy light bulbs and organic clothing, as well a principle of only stocking products it would use in its own home or office.
Brighton and Hove's Nigel Berman is an inspirational to us all. With his experience of running an environmentally friendly publishers and a fascination with green household products, he jacked in his job and launched Nigel's Eco Store in 2005. On his site he writes: "I wanted to show that being green didn't necessarily have to be a compromise, that there is eco-friendly stuff out there that is attractive, aspirational and desirable -- things that I'd be happy to have in my own home, because they look good, and work, whilst minimising their impact on the environment."
A quick browse of the site will find many funky business accessories alongside gadgets for the home; we like the bamboo mouse, keyboard and monitor. They still contain electronics, but the casings aren't made of off-white plastic.
Nigel's Eco Store started as a real backroom operation -- packing orders from home and lugging them up to the post office. In 2007, a new HQ was set up in a shop in Hove and he now has 15,000 customers. "People are recognising how changing simple everyday habits can make a difference such as using eco balls for your laundry rather than detergent, or using an eco kettle to boil the exact amount of water when you make a cuppa," writes Nigel.
There is a distinctly viridian tinge to Yahoo's other Finds categories. Ethical website of the year winner is The Nag, a site that badgers subscribers into doing something better each month. The Nag is probably best described in its own words: "This is a place for anyone who'd like to do something about climate change, or sweatshops, or eating better food, but, well, you know... busy, things come up. Here's the deal. Sign up to get nagged each month about one easy thing you can do to be greener, cleaner and, if you're not careful, a tiny bit smug."
Runners up in the Ethical category include the Eat the Seasons, promoting local, seasonal food; Do The Green Thing, which is a bit like The Nag except instead of nagging it makes everything very jolly; Different Travel, dedicated to combining volunteerism and gap-yearism; and Trees for Cities, which there would be a whole host more of if people didn't rip them up so they can park their car in their front garden. Runner-up for the Shopping category is Ethical Weddings, if that's not a mutually exclusive concept.
