There's no plastic recycling where I live either, so an alternative to it is a welcome change.

I don't think it's true that the organic movement is responsible for knowledge of local food and seasonality -- until the current generation of shoppers, people bought locally and seasonally because that is what was available and best-priced.

Grow your own basil in a pot on your kitchen windowsill (it's easy from seed) and you'll save that £1.29... :)

We got our flat-screen TV repaired in December after it broke down, and it worked out much cheaper than getting a new one. It was quite hard to find a repair place though, some of them wanted money up front which was not returned if they couldn't fix the problem. When we did find one, it felt much better than just dumping the old one and shelling out all over again.

"throwing away 200 barely used plastic cups"...I haven't got enough friends to worry about running out of real cups and glasses!

Composting is also ideal protection against ID theft - if you shred important documents and then compost them, they're never going to fall into the wrong hands!

If they are in good condition, and especially if they are known good brands, eBay is also a good option.
