Several forms of Iron-Man can exist today, just not the full package portrayed in the movies.
They were first called Power assist suits. Now prosthetics.
The technology to make the pulsars that the original Iron man used as weapons and propulsion is not available YET! However it can still fly by a quad-copter platform or the wearable jets with wings.
Iron-mans unlimited power source is just out of reach, with Hydrogen gas motors or piezoelectric generator coming on line soon should help.
Mind control is a long way off, the human body rejects foreign connections, and external reading is not fine enough.
Simple pressure sensors are capable of controlling an Iron-Man suit movements and with communication links a few thousand at the same time.
Heads-up displays and voice control commands are very good today and will only improve.
Environmental control would require massive re-engineering.
For me Dr. Rodney Brooks has the correct answer."Build many inexpensive robots and send them out, if you 1 or 2 no big deal." I have designed a human controlled robot that could replace solders, Bomb disposal, Firemen, Police, Pilots, Seals, Radiation workers, rescue workers, any dangerous occupation. The WALDO could be the size of a 3 year old to King Kong. "Size not Matter".
The power assist suit not only can support the disabled and allow normal functioning but allow any task to be performed at optimal strength levels (adjustable) and allow many repetitions which I suspect the physical trainers would call muscle toning.

sine me up
when the day comes i hope to be around for it .still think it could be done now with some one inside instead of being run by computer. but it would hve to be a lot biger than the size of iron man,say about three times the size .

What gets me...
...Is that "hero" movies commonly and completely ignore the mass/momentum aspects of existing in a physical reality. Iron Man gets thrown violently to earth, hard enough to blow himself a new crater in the ground, but survives unscathed inside his suit.
Right.
He'd be a suit full of bloody scraps, is what he'd be. I know this is a movie, but why credit the techy aspects of it any more than the physics?
Note that a "hero" who had invented a gravity generator, would be but a tech tweak from casting it as an inertial dampener, if he could control it fast enough to be able to counter the force of impact with an equally powerful anti-force, for the split second it was required.
Risky, for control mishaps, but workable as a concept.
But since Tony Stark's only invention was the spin-dizzy, he should have been squashed like a bug.

Marry the ADS 2000 Hard suit http://www.history.navy.mil/museums/keyport/SkinThey'reIn/Photos/JIMsuit.jpg
with
the The Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) 5 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2a/Hybrid_Assistive_Limb.jpg/220px-Hybrid_Assistive_Limb.jpg
and
THE MARTIN JETPACK,

And you'll have a real 1st generation Iron Man suit.
