The answers are YES, it is considered a very dirty process and YES, at best the life-cycle would be a few months.
As seen with most clothing treated with silver for it's anti-microbial properties, they stop being effective after a few uses.
This sounds like a great science project of no value in practical use.
But it will be appealing to the green crowd who have money to burn on looking eco-aware.
