Philosophical Question
Great article. This touches on a basic issue in the philosophy of science: realism versus methodological naturalism. If there is a unique objective reality, then any sufficiently advanced alien race will have discovered scientific laws essentially identical to those we know, and therefore will send messages which we can recognize. On the other hand, if science is no more than a methodology for prediction, then there are an infinite number of theories which can predict any finite sequence of experimental results. In this case, the aliens may indeed be incomprehensible to us.
