How does 'resistance' to 'suicide' gene work?

http://www.smartplanet.com/forum/discussions/1-8015-75747

Most folks think that genetic mutations are changes in thecode(base arrangement), but some mutations are knownto be caused by genes that should be turned off, but getturned on, or by genes that should be turned on, but getturned off. With no change in the DNA sequence. Supposethe mosquito adapts to having a 'suicide gene' by turningit off. Then, what do we have? Well possibly, we get avery long-lived mosquito capable of stinging many people. After all, it is the humans who have the disease that giveit to the mosquito first. IE, more stings means more casesof the disease. 'Mix and Match' GMO has a Murphy's Lawaspect to it because we know too little to think that we are not making potentially big mistakes. Pay them to doresearch on humans? I think not.

That is genocide. We as the most venomous species on this planet are already responsible directly and indirectly for the "population collapse" more accurately put, EXTINCTION, of many species as it is. What we need to do, is start controlling our own human population so that we dont finish destroying this planet and leaving a barren world in our wake. I love tech., and science, dont get me wrong, but this should not be done(the releasing of this test subjects to destroy an entire population). Im all for knowledge and scientific study, but I am not and cannot agree with this action. Reason aside from my own personal feelings is ecological disturbance. You take out this species and you are going to offset the food chain in many different ecosystems and niches.

The stress of male genes to cause descendants from living to maturity may work in a short period of time but may change the way the females choose mates to reject those genetically modified males. The lethal gene would become more rare as the species adapt to this new stressor. We have bred more malicious bacteria by indescriminate use of antibiotics. Prescribing antibiotics for virus based diseases (like colds) and also stopping the prescribed course of antibiotics has helped aggressive bacteria like MRSA become ever harder to control. The use of genetically modified mosquitos could bring a more robust and resistant mosquito instead.
