They culled, not to pick data that matched their expectations, as you've implied, but to get relevant data for the project, leaving out related or unrelated, but irrelevant data. Example: A paper on a rare frog discovery, irrelevant, so left out.

Interesting story but crappy reporting
Yeah the reporter/narrator obviously needs to look up the word "culled". Also she should make up her mind whether 97% of publishing climate scientists are right about global warming, or if the 2% left in the fossil fuel fan club are right after all. Ffs! Perhaps she could read Merchants of Doubt for a few hints.
