Living bridges
When I was a kid we did something similar with sapplings that could be bent in the way we wanted them to go. Our parents were not happy with our construction projects with their windbreak ( a row of trees to "break" the cold north wind from tender crops, etc ). I think the kids of America were greatly mistreated "green" architects. Too funny.

"Efficient"
I guess it depends on your definition of efficient. Usually efficient doesn't mean the same thing as fast. I'd say this bridge construction is FAR more efficient than modern methods, because it takes next to no energy or resource input.

OK...I can see this may work for a couple of dozen people using it per week, but imagine what would happen to this hapless tree if several thousand people used it per day! Uh-uh...no way will this tree survive...a nice solution for deep in the jungle, but in a more populated area, wouldn't work...And besides...years of work and training could be destroyed by one Indiana Jones with a machete!
