In Boulder, CO we have a similar company that just put a bunch of rental kiosks around the city. The bikes are very distinctive and have the company logo prominently on them. They're not real road or mountain bikes, more like the first bike you bought as a kid. I doubt they would have any major resale value on the second-hand market since the original ownership is so obvious. It'd be like selling a yellow taxicab on the used car market.

I have to say that so far the bikes don't appear widely used. However, it's summer and the university students aren't in town.

Bikes are pretty cheap, especially second hand, so why not just buy a rugged, urban- designed bike to get you there and back. What if you can't get a share bike when you have to get home? If a share bike gets vandalized after you used it, who gets charged? In NY kids will wreck anything they can't steal, like shopping carts for example. Nice idea but it relies too much on honesty and consideration to work in the real world.

SOBI claims to be a new technology, and is working on a patent pending system. I saw this same system in Germany 10 yrs ago and is still around today and operated by Germany's National Rail Line Duetch Ban.
