RE: Uncle Sam orders military to 'buy American'... solar panels
"The provision was drafted to be compliant with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, UPI reports. Nonetheless, it is certain to be a point of contention when Chinese President Hu Jintao visits the U.S. next week."

I don't see what manufacturing for our military has to do with "World Trade".

I mean, if we are going to have to abide by world trade rules in order to supply our military does that mean we would be required to buy tanks/jets/helicopters from countries that we could potentially go to war with?

The whole idea of abiding to WTO rules to supply our military is just idiotic. It has nothing to do with trade.

Not to mention, if President Hu Jintao wants to complain then maybe we should make him aware of China's low quality of manufacture, endless human rights violations, extremely corrupt govermnent, etc. etc. If nothing else, those are good enough reasons to NOT allow China to supply solar panels to the U.S. military.

The U. S. Department of Defense has no business buying anything at all from China.

Here's a bright idea... buy all your military goods from your competition... yeah, that's it...

We could buy tanks from Russia, scud missles from Iran.... atomic bombs from P. R. Korea... fighter jets from Libya... heck, we could stop all defense manufacturing....

sheesh.

There are already parts that go in the US military hardware that are only obtainable from foreign sources. How scary is that?

The United States government, military or any other tax payer funded organization should be required to purchase from U.S. sources first, and only allowed to acquire from foreign sources when no domestic source is available. Don't get me wrong. I am no isolationist and if the foreign item is cheaper or better, then the public should have the right to purchase it. But the government's # 1 responsibility is to our country and our country is in an economic crisis. Purchasing locally is good for the local economy on every level.

National Security is the Reason
For an excellent discussion of the risks inherent in purchasing components for critical military systems from foreign suppliers, read the following:

Buy American only
It has long been US defense policy to only buy American made products. One, it ensures US control over such products, tanks, ships, aircraft and guns and the argument that control of such supply is necessary for security reasons. And that makes sense. It also rewards and protects American defense manufacturers. Everybody happy? Not quite.
America's Allies also have defense industries. The US flatly refuses to support products that may be even better than their own for " security reasons " then bullies it's friends to use overpriced , obsolete and defective junk. Someone has to buy last decades fighter planes to pay for the new ones? Right? While reserving the good stuff for compliant allies. Disagree with a stupid US policy decision and your parts supply is suddenly no longer there. Many countries choose instead to have their own defense industries which of course makes them not " team players ". The US always plays fair, as long as fair is defined as whatever happens, the US gets the best deal. Which is why there is that old saying, " With friends like Americans, who needs enemies?
