Sounds like a great idea, and perhaps could be used in the Boeing
Dreamliners. Although I am thinking very old technology, electronics
technicians can tell where there is a malformed high frequency
transmission cable by simply sending a signal along it, and
measuring where the reflection comes back from. No doubt, the
same sort of crack detection could be measured using light and
fiber-optics.
