Maybe 2015 ??
EVs are irrevocably upon us.. It should have been done, years, years ago.. before
the gulf and all.
I suggest you listen carefully when he makes the analogy with the iphone: mass
market adoption could even be 2015 instead of 2020. Get ready !!

RE: Mass market adoption of EVs by 2020?
Fire up those coal and natural gas generators! Our outdated
electric grid will simply melt under the strain. I can't wait for all the
stops between here and there after a few miles to charge up the car
on my extended family vacation.
I only hope you have good Iphone reception when your EV battery
runs out.

@sfitrack
You mean shut down one by one the dirtiest power plants ?

First of all, typical EV will recharge its batteries at night using all that excess electricity
that we have to find all sorts things to conserve (taking water to height is my favorite:)
otherwise throw it away.

Secondly, think all the energy we will be saving when we don't have to go out drilling,
transporting, refining, transporting again (and sometimes accidents happen that you
have to clean - maybe others you can NOT clean) and then when it's in my tank I will
only put 20-25% of so to useful work the rest being lost to nature in the heat and
smoke -eventually end up in what you're eating, in your lungs, or in the atmosphere...
etc..

There is nothing a nay-sayer can do to reverse the tendency to go electric, silly
comments beyond everything.

@mimarsinan

If these things will charge at night (and I agree with you on that
point), when demand is the lowest, then why does the Big
Brother smart grid need to watch you?

As someone who owns a hybrid vehicle for the benefits that it
brings to me, I look at these things in a pragmatic way. If/when an
EV comes along that will suit my needs (not what you think are
my needs), I will buy it.

@sfitrack was merely pointing out the inconsistency between the
urge to get everyone on the Big Brother's smart grid...I mean into
EVs and the resistance by environmentalists to truly clean,
mature technologies like nuclear fuel for power.

@JustKurt

Well of course, the ideal situation would be having solar panels on your roof
generating/storing or selling to the grid those clean elctrons than buying back at
night, thus shaving the dirtiest peak electricity generating plants. But the
problem is the cost of these clean tech compared to dirty-old tech. Unless we
compensate all the good and punish the evil, there is no way out of this mess.
EVs are godsend pieces to solve our environment puzzle. That's why, I'm
predicting that it will be viral, although it should have been done years ago, it's
better late than never...
