RE: Geneticist George Church: Sequencing human genome 'high priority' for China
While I don't agree with the rabid comments of sfaid (above) it makes sense that this kind of human engineering would appeal to the current Chinese government but it might be wise to explore the ethical implications of where all this new information will lead us. It seems that geneticists are the new saviors in medicine and biological design. But just like the US engineering corp of the 1930s that built the Louisiana levy system, which effectively block the formation of vital wetlands. Now we need to rethink all that engineering -- while China pushed ahead with their 3 Gorges Dam (1999-2005) despite the environmental controversy. We need to simulate effects in the natural world so the exploration of the sub-atomic worlds of DNA, RNA, and plasmas lead to results that we hopefully won't have to try to reverse a century or so later.
