How the brain functions is a great mystery. We can see what is happening but not well enough to understand what it is that is happening. This is like the koan about a sword being sharp enough to cut anything but not itself.
Kurt Vonnegan in "Breakfast of Champions" shows that what we are and what we do is based on the chemistry in the brain, bad chemistry makes for bad behavior. There was a study that found that there is no free will because the brain actions can be explained as a chemical reaction to events. I don't agree with Vonnegut's idea or that we have no free will.
As the article states, the number of disciplines involved range from chemistry, psychology, biology and physics. The research has already provided mind controlled machines that help the handicapped. Further research should be interesting and insightful.

the Brain!
thanks Dr. Hobbiss, I have been telling every body that we use 100% of our brain, it is obvious to me that if your brain can analyse every pixel it sees, understand in their language everything it hears, maintains balance on one foot, taking a drink with one hand writing their names with the other, while assessing ambient temperature hot, warm or cold, addressing the sensation of hunger, thirst, viral sickness, the brain can and does address all of those issues in a split second, the idea that 10% percent is the reason for some peoples inabilities is only comforting to those people who are overly confident of their own abilities so as to explain to those who are not so confident how much smarter they are than the rest of the world, and to those who are not successful is comforting that they are inadequate because they where handed a bad brain a good excuse that their brains only works 10% of the time, my suggestion is don't wast time making excuses about your inabilities and do some thing else already and change your M.O.
I agree that the Brain is an amazing muscle, I don't like it but I try to understand my limitations as to why I can't remember peoples name after they tell me or why I can't do math in my head as fast as some other people do, is frustrating but I don't blame it on a 10% brain capacity, there has to be something else that makes some people able and others not so, and size of the particular component of the brain might be the reason, I think the brain grows different in everyone, like no two snow flakes are the same.
