Prius (or Leaf) to power parts of house
you folks dont quite understand. You can tap off the 12v battery in the left rear of the Prius. It uses a switching power supply from the 220v traction pack to keep the 12v battery charged. An alternator in a regular car would be pretty useless. You can pull 100 amps from the 12v battery or 1,200 watts. The Prius keeps the traction pack full by running and turning off as necessary.
Use a Xantrex 1,000 watt true sine inverter and you can run a refrigerator and or a few lights to save the food and have a bit of light. You can also do this with a Nissan Leaf and have about 3.5 days power for a fridge, disconnect, charge the batteries and do again. Electricity can come from PV, Wind, natural gas, nuclear plants, etc.
