Is because the US has been footing the bill for their defense since WW II ended.

The UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the rest of them with almost non-existent military would have been buried under a mountain of debt decades ago if they had to pay for their social welfare states and their own national defense.

As is their welfare/nanny state policies are still crushing them, even with US defense subsidies.
