This can't happen soon enough for me, but to my mind, ditching the cart altogether would be the better way to go.
When on a flight in which a meal is not scheduled, please, just hand us our drinks as we board. Airlines can get half-sized cans of drinks, so no pouring is necessary, just distribute at boarding.
If a meal is scheduled, let us come up to the galley to get our trays. This can be done by seat numbers, five or six at a time. Problem solved.
The cart as currently used is a mindless exercise in crowd control. Airlines, instead of trying to exercise your muscle over us, just treat us like human beings, and we might learn how not to despise each other.
The first most annoying aspect about flying: Children. I love them, but in the confines of an airplane, . . .

Smart Trolley
The serving trolley should be designed to hang from a magnetic track from the ceiling of the cabin so that food can be served without having a steward/stewardess to send them. The narrow aisle will have less hazard for passengers who have to take a walk to go to the toilet or elsewhere.

Food Service
How about making seats more functional and using them to stack food, at least the canned, pre-packaged items. Hot meals can be brought from the galley....
