What happens if...
What happens if someone gets into the pool with a skin rash or some other type of infection?

We swim in natural pools all the time, but there's also always the chance for bacterial infection in such a pool, because the water is not sterilized.

The ozone that companies say is useful for reducing the need for chlorine (and these days comes packaged on nearly every spa sold) is actually likely more harmful than the chlorine. It corrodes nearby metal parts, degrades rubber equipment seals and disintegrates vinyl pillows and hot tub covers.

Not a week goes by that we don't hear from a hapless customer who just bought a new spa and has an asthmatic child that can't use it because of the ozone. When ozone levels get high in urban areas, people with respiratory problems are warned to stay indoors and limit their activity.

Metal ionization is great - the best kept secret with regard to pools and hot tubs - but the Nature2 system is just a cartridge that goes in your filter - difficult to adjust the levels. It's telling that they don't even give you a test kit, so that you can measure the ion level.

If you plan to put an ionizer on your pool or hot tub, it should be an electronic device with adjustability and a way to test for proper levels. Also, all ionized tubs and pools should be oxidized weekly to burn up the dead organic matter that accumulates.

Please pardon the plug which seems exceedingly relevant and appropriate in this case...

Dimension One Spas...
Not all spas have ozone issues.. Ozone has an extremely short life span in a hot tub... Dimension One figured out that if you take the ozone and pipe it around the entire tub before it comes back into the spa, all the ozone(O3) will have turned to O2 by the time it completes the trip. So it still sterilizes the water, but has zero off-gassing of O3.

So what happens if someone gets into the pool with a skin rash or some other type of infection? The good bacteria and microbes take care of it and everyone lives happily ever after...

How long have people been swimming in ponds, lakes, streams, etc.? If water has bad stuff in it, there will be an issue, but that bad stuff is not transmitted from person to twater to person contact...

Now if someone has a bowell movement in your bio pool, you may have water issues for a few weeks (until the plants and microbes do their thing). But then again, someone took a dump in your pool, your issues are more than just water quality...

Just call it a pond
Growing up we had a pond on my relatives farm that we swam in. Every winter we'd drain it and muck it out with the cat*. In the summer we'd swim with the bullfrogs and fish among the lily pads. I can't remember the last time I was in an actual swimming pool. Most of my swimming now is in rivers as an addendum to my whitewater rafting.

My favorite swimmin' hole
When I was growing up, we swam in a beaver pond. No maintenance required - the beavers took care of that.

beavers
If it had beavers it almost certainly was flowing water. Not feasible in urban pools.

Chemical Free Pool
Sounds like a great alternative, however I question the functionality in the everyday backyard pool. We all know the harms involved with chlorine, especially for those who suffer from asthma and common allergies. That's why keeping your spa and pool chemical free is extremely important for your family's health. I've been using the Clear Choice system for years, and all the pitfalls of swimming in a chlorinated pool have been eliminated.
