Nature has been trying. Man keeps getting in the way.
For 40 years the people in the US have been pounded with the fact that tens of thousands maybe hundreds of thousands are dying every year in Africa and we must help. Guilt trip after guilt trip was heaped on us.
So we have sent millions of tons of food aid and countless billions in cash to save the shrinking population that was starving to death in Africa. We thought we were doing something good.
The reality is we have been imposing a western lifestyle standard on simple people whose way of life had not changed much in a thousand years.
All we have done in 40 years of "charity" is feed an unsustainable population explosion. From a few hundred million post WWII to over 1 billion today with 2 billion predicted by 2030. At the same time the population of the US hardly doubled. As others have mentioned, if it were not for imigration many western nations, including the US, would be losing population.
We forced people who had lived a modest, by western standards, subsistence life style for many generations into a life style built around dependence on external food sources. Sadly the people of Afirca have largely forgotten how to feed themselves.
You now have warlords fighting over food shipments because food is power. They are targeting the few local farmers there are with intimidation and when that fails, executions, because people capable of self subsistence do not fit the modern power structure.
Like it or not, a handful of people, local war lords and UN staffers included, have gotten very rich off the charity efforts in Africa.
The politics of poverty. Keep people poor and dependent to make a buck off the support system.
What do we do when it falls apart?
