"use the stalks for fuel." is not what is being done now. I am 100% onboard with using waste to make bio fuel as you suggest. If it comes down to throwing it in a land fill or burning it in a field or making fuel out of it, have at. Make all the fuel you can. When the UN finally is onboard, you know the use of any food product for fuel production is moronic. Sadly, probably 99.999999% of all bio fuels produced are currently being made from food products. Have you seen the price of sugar or corn products lately? There is a good reason why global bio fuel production was so low for decades until the food for fuel mandates started. People were only using waste to make fuel.

This man's an idiot! *Fuel*-grade ethanol can be made from *cellulose*; in other words, use the wheat or corn grain for food, and use the stalks for fuel. Go Google-search "cellulosic ethanol" if you don't believe me. There are also some new techniques being developed to make biofuels out of algae -- pond-scum. Where did he get the idea that it's only grain that can be made into fuel-grade ethanol? ...Ooops, never mind; I think we can guess.--Leslie Fish

All bio-fuel production should stop immediately before irreparable harm is done to the land for future food production. Spare our kids and grand kids from starving because someone wanted to run their big car engine, etc. Where concentrated farming has been done for years and using chemical fertilizers salination of the land has taken place. There are areas that are like deserts now and not able to grow much more than a few weeds. Do we want all arable land to go that way? Better decide what's important. Obama is sort of on the right track providing he chops subsidies for bio-fuel production. Hydrogen fuel and electric vehicles are still in their developmental infancy and need much more work. Don't give up on work on that research and development.

Food for fuel is stupid policy. President Obama had a chance to end the madness when the Bush mandate was to expire, but he left the mess continue. What the politicians and the eco nuts refuse to acknowledge is that policies like this are a failure for one major reason. They are designed to place all of the financial burden of its implementation on the average lowly citizen. We are the ones being stuck with higher fuel prices because ethanol is more expensive than gasoline. We are the ones being stuck with higher food prices as 60 percent of the US corn crop goes to ethanol production. We are being punished for needing a way to get to work. We are being punished for wanting lights or heat in our houses.Any clean energy, save the planet, energy sources cannot drive a majority of people into poverty.

Ethanol is near perfect example of the destruction that subsidies do on every level; political, economic and environmental. Once bad policy is clearly recognized as bad policy, it is still impossible to get rid of because of the political "feedback loop" that subsidies create; subsidized interests feed a portion of the subsidy back to Washington to keep the subsidies coming. Over time, more and more people (nearly 100% of which will vote) get dependent upon the subsidy. Once established, these feedback loops are practically impossible to break. Even Al Gore now admits that Ethanol was a "mistake" he made just because he needed to buy the votes:http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/11/23/al-gore-mea-culpa-support-for-corn-based-ethanol-was-a-mistake/

Using alcohol in gasoline for fuel is stupid. It requires more energy to produce the alcohol than we get back by burning it. My cars have over the years gotten reduced mileage almost directly lowered by the amount of alcohol in it, ie 10% alcohol equals 10% reduction in mileage. Gasahol is a political fuel! It was enacted by congress uo use up our incredibly large corn stockpiles so that the government could continue to purchase the farmers surplus grain. This kept the farmers (big commercial farming corps) happy and voting and contributing. What's wrong with that? We are now looking at what could happen in a severe drought when the afore mentioned grain producers don't produce any grain. We have international contracts for the delivery of grain overseas which must be fulfilled and an unatural useage for fule which combined will probably, almost certainly cost us the American public in elevated food prices. I don't advocate legislating against gasahol I just want the special tax incentives removed and the subsidized purchase of grain removed and let the billion dollar industry sink or swim by its on merits.
