There was another solution...
Cordon off the area where the body hits the ground and the deceased becomes a piece of artwork.

Does it really save anyone?
Does the lack of opportunity really deter people from committing suicide? I've never been (intentionally) suicidal myself. Are there really people who say "Darn, I'm not going to off myself if it's going to be a quiet death after swallowing a bottle of sleeping pills. It has to be a dramatic splat after jumping off a landmark."

Re: Does it really save anyone?
Suicide is often a cry for attention or an angry attempt to hurt others. (Yes, I know, neither is logical, but that's the way it is.) For those cases, killing yourself in dramatic fashion is perceived to be better than going quietly in your bedroom.
More to the point, though, is that killing yourself quietly in your bedroom doesn't set up NYU for a negligence lawsuit.
