Poppycock
Neil,
The United States is a free country because of citizens' rights. One of these rights is the right of self protection. In terms of deterrence to foreign invasion, the right of the citizenry to bear arms has prevented our enemies from crossing our borders in the two World Wars and it was widely discussed during the Cold War that the Soviets feared a "rifle behind every tree". You may be content without the right of self protection, but I and my country are not.
