Take a real vacation
To each their own but I'm glad that most of my major vacations make it impossible to do any work for my employer. This past spring I spent 23 days floating the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. The only outside contact I had was on the day we passed Phantom Ranch I called my mother to see how she was doing. I spent maybe 20 minutes thinking about work in that whole time.

You made your career choice, Joe
...so if you are happy putting in some hours while on vacation because "you are your own boss," good for you. However, there are a great number of Americans who get little downtime as it is, and they neither want nor need to be tethered to their jobs and to their bosses 365 days of the year.

There is a reason why America leads the world in deaths by heart attack. We think it is a badge of honor to die for your employer. Too bad that your employer will most likely be looking for your replacement two weeks after you die (or even more likely that he will just spread out your work to your already over-loaded colleagues), while your loved ones are still grieving your loss.

work and vavcation
vacation = to vacate. as in, vacate the office. more or less leaving it behind for a while. I don't take my work notebook with me on vacation because things could happen to it. My boss does not expect me to do any work while on vacation. "It is your time off, you should not feel compelled to work unless there is an emegency". My boss is traveling now to Europe. He will be working the first week then spend two weeks with his relatives on vacation. He does not expect to be bothered with work while he is on vacation, although he will check his e-mail in case something comes up. otherwise it is the team and his admin secretary that will take care of things until he is back. The above scenarios are true now as I am a semiconductor application engineer, and before when I was a Technical Marketer. I understand that some people do want to work on vacation but I believe that is an individual choice which should be driven by confidence, not fear.
