The distances that need to be covered in Australia rival the American southwest in their remoteness and inhospitable environment.

Yeah, I agree. The city and rural issue is an important one. For a city car, EV is perfect. You'd only need four or five charging stations around the inner city. But go out of the city centre, and it's a different matter.
