"the development of tailored drugs" - but not a cure.
"could result in the development of tailored drugs" - and that is the entire focus of modern medical research and the pharmaceutical companies that fund that research.
Science has known for some time that cancer - caused primarily by either congenital genetic errors early in life, or by the default genetically programed senescence process that we call "aging." If medical researchers focused on ways to interrupt the genetic controlled aging processes, our immune systems and cells in general would stay efficient and active and destroy and or repair as it does in our youth. We need to stay physiological "young" in order to stay healthy. Once the genetic aging cascade has begun it's just a matter of time before one or more failures of your immune system (genetically commanded not to repair itself) allows one infection/disease or organ failure to make you "sick" and ultimately ends your life.
Instead of focusing on this process that causes the cellular failures and diseases, medical researchers and big pharma (that owns by far the vast majority of medical research) funds research that makes the biggest profits for big pharma - drugs that either mask or treats the symptoms of aging rather than the causes. Essentially big pharma has become the farmer of the sick and dying. Their financial motivation is not make drugs that cure, but to maintain the conditions that require their symptom relieving drugs. They are the quintessential biological definition of a parasite - taking as much as they can from the host without killing it before it can move on to it's next host. This has to change.
