In this 'generator' form, in some portable application... what does it eat??

They don't.
Viruses don't eat. To remind you, viruses replicate by invading cells and then re-cording the cell's dna to make more viruses. No 'eating' necessary. They're already nature's tiny nanobots.

PETA will complain
I can just see it now, the nutbags from PETA will say they're exploiting the viruses and will get a court order to stop production because of it.
