Renault-Nissan’s Carlos Ghosn: It’s time for the electric car

By Larry Dignan | Nov 18, 2009 |

The electric car is real. Its here. And before long fueling will become a lot easier as charging stations become as normal as parking meters. That’s the outlook from Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault and Nissan, who recently lectured at Wharton.

Electric cars may work great where the population density supports it

But in the midwest and southern US, distances between cities are just too great and the population density will not support the infrastructure costs of recharging stations anytime soon. I commute daily 25+ miles each way, and frequently go to see my daughters who are hundreds of miles away.

I haven't listened to Carlos Ghosn, so I'll going out on a limb a little here. I suspect he looked at the problem from the point of view of someone who lives with a population density we find in Europe, or the east coast of the US.

Of course electric cars won't suit everyone. Just as some people are well served by compact cars and others need SUVs or capacity for lots of luggage or passengers, so electric cars will suit some and not others. My guess they will be most popular as a second vehicle for households where someone needs it for local shopping etc and commuting to work. That's an enormous market and if the price is right electric vehicles could really take off.
