For those who feel that the Toyota Prius just doesn’t have enough horsepower, behold: the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, which the automaker calls the world’s first full diesel hybrid vehicle.
Using a combination of diesel and electric power, the all-wheel drive car can operate in “Zero Emissions Vehicle” mode, and can get nearly 62 miles per gallon (with 99 grams per kilometer of CO2 emissions). The hybrid makes use of a 163-horsepower 2.0-liter diesel engine for the front wheels, and a 37-horsepower electric motor to power the real axle - which functions separately from the car’s combustible drivetrain.
The new Peugeot is not cheap, with a price tag starting at more than $42,000 (at current exchange rates). Yet all 300 limited edition 3008s sold out in nine days earlier this year in Europe, so the market for the diesel hybrid looks promising.
So far, Peugeot has made no plans to market the 3008 on this side of the Atlantic.
